C/K: Driftwood Sunday May 3 - Sue Foxx

After closely watching the Driftwood River rise following spring rains, it was decided on Thursday to move the trip to Sunday, May 3, to insure a safe flow. For anyone planning trips in the future, Blue’s Canoes, the local outfitter, does not put on canoe paddlers over 4 feet or kayak paddlers at over 5 feet. Our level was 4.5 feet at 8 am with the river dropping throughout the trip. Four club paddlers from Indianapolis, Louisville and west central Indiana took off from Furnas Mill for a 14 mile (4hr) trip down to Lowell Bridge. Thanks to the higher water levels, we had a fast and mostly rock free trip. The take out which is in a rapids was challenging but with experienced paddlers, all made it without incident. To me the most significant event was dipping my paddle directly next to a small snake hanging vertically in Sugar Creek…eek! Lastly, be aware that Highway 252 as you go into Edinburgh is closed but if you simply go around the sign and follow your gps toward Camp Atterbury there is a simple work around.
