Trip Level Guide 1-2021.docx

Apostle Islands National Lakeshore exists as a coastal park at the northeastern tip of the Bayfield Peninsula, the northernmost mainland point in Wisconsin. It consists of 21 islands and a 12-mile mainland area and has significant historic, scenic, natural, and recreational resource.

We will be in paddle/camping groups of 5-6. The maximum number of participants will be capped at 15 depending on number of team leaders and ability level of the paddlers.

We will plan to camp at Little Sand Bay Campground Saturday and Sunday nights and will paddle to the Mainland Sea Caves on Sunday. On Monday morning, our groups will set out for the islands for 5 nights of primitive camping. We will arrive back to Little Sand Bay Saturday morning and head for home.

The route that each group will take is determined by the Team Leader and is dependent on what campsites are available. Sample Itineraries we have done in the past:

Here is an island map if you want to check them out:   https://www.nps.gov/apis/planyourvisit/upload/APIS-map-07.pdf

Required Equipment:  Sea kayaks with spray skirts, fore and aft bulkheads, full perimeter deck lines, pump/paddle float and safety equipment are required. You will have to carry your own camping gear, clothes, and food with you in your kayak.

Level 2 and above Seakayak Trips are limited to members who have demonstrated, prior to participation, the ability to:

·       Safely exit their kayak while wearing a spray skirt

·       Participate in an assisted rescue to re-enter their kayak

Registration for every trip is always conditional upon final approval by the Trip Leader. The Trip Leader may communicate with you to assess whether your skills & equipment are appropriate for the conditions.
