East Fork White River

Registration is closed

Please join us for the annual East Fork trip this year as we paddle a 9.4 mile section from Brownstown to Medora in south central Indiana. We will pass under three historical nineteenth century bridges and float by some of the states longest sand bars on this stretch. You can expect about four hours of paddle time along with a lunch break and the total shuttle is only 19 miles of highway related miles. Our put-in will be @ 10 am at the DNR access located on U.S. 50 approximately 2 miles west of the Brownstown courthouse at the SE corner of the bridge marked wit the standard DNR sign. Our take out will be at the DNR access at the Medora Covered Bridge/S.R. 235 Bridge located two miles east of Medora.

We will paddle one of only a small handful of reliable 24/7/365 streams in the state in the mid-summer months and should have a steady 2-3 m.p.h current averaging between 150-250 feet in width throughout. This section was last ran in 2018. Upon our finishing we will tour the 1875 Medora Covered Bridge which is the longest standing covered bridge in the U.S. coming in at 453 feet and second longest in the world as it is truly an engineering specimen of work after nearly a century and a half of survival. The other two bridges will be the Vallonia Iron Bridge (1887, 250' and 2 span) and the old B & O railroad trestle 1898 and 286' in length.       For sightseeing purposes the Jackson-Washington State Forest nearby offers  one of Indiana's most scenic drives in Skyline Drive (4 vistas and a fire tower) at over 400 feet above the lower  lying area. Camping is also close by at Starve Hollow Beach (modern) and the J-W State Forest ($13 primitive). The J-W primitive is one of the finest states forest campgrounds around as I have camped in all  of them and some are not too impressive but this one ranks about as high as you can.                                                                                                                                                                                                Please email to CANOEINDIANA@yahoo.com or call 812-767-1317 before 10 p.m. on Friday July 9th. Sincerely, Richard Tekulve the East Fork trip leader since 2010.
