WHITEWATER TRIPS

July 4th Independence Day at the Yough July 3-6

Upper/Lower Yough & Savage River

SPONSOR: Elroy Shayes : 812-343-6544

One of the premier whitewater destinations in the eastern United States. Every year, over 100,000 people visit Ohiopyle to paddle the Youghiogheny, and the Lower Yough is the most popular whitewater section for good reason. The famous Lower Yough begins just below Ohiopyle Falls and flows seven miles downstream, and is one of the busiest sections of whitewater east of the Mississippi River, with numerous Class Il & III rapids that challenge and reward experienced paddlers. For those wanting something more relaxed, the Middle Yough offers Class I and II rapids ideal for flatwater or beginning whitewater kayakers or canoeists.

PAST TRIPS & EVENTS

Demo Day and Picnic June 13 - by Mariann Davis

A successful 5th HCKC DEMO Day with Fluid Fun outfitters. 31+ members and guests demoed over 30 boats. ( Too busy playing, demoing and soclizing to photograph the real flavor of the day).

A beginner kayak skills class preceded the event with 8 new and old members participating. Thanks to all the volunteers and Kayak instructors who continue to invest their energy and talent to make HCKC one of the best recreational kayak clubs in the Midwest.

Paddlesports booth at Tippecanoe County Outdoor Explore! June 13 - by Brent Saucerman

I'm really thankful to be part of a group with volunteers dedicated to putting people on the water in a safe environment. Judy Thompson, John Lawrence, and Greg Ubelhor have all volunteered at Tippecanoe County Parks and Recreation's Outdoor Explore(!) over the last seven or eight years. Greg and Judy set up the event this year Greg circled in volunteers from Crossroads of America Council of Scouting America's Voyageur Canoe (and Kayak) training program staff including Mark Janson (Director) Angie Adelsberger, Carrie Leonard Coutant (also a club member), and myself. My lovely wife, Janalee Lawhead Saucerman, has been through the course, and I'm a past course director. Between the eight of us, we conservatively estimate we put around 250-300 people from the area in canoes and kayaks, including a lot of young families. Many of the event participants had never been in a paddle craft before today, and now have a positive experience they shared with their families or friends. John, Judy and others got people signed in and fitted with PFDs. Carrie, Jana, and Angie helped people board, and Jana, Carrie, Greg, and I worked on the water with safety and coaching. I towed 7 boats, and "pirated" 1, hopping from my canoe into another to help paddle back in against strong winds. Between the volunteers, we brought 15 boats. Thanks to everyone for helping introduce so many people, and especially kiddos, to paddling. This is in addition to another great club event held at Geist today, also to introduce people to paddling, try out gear and boats, and for some, take a class Kudos to all involved. Sorry. We didn't really have time for photos (or lunch).

White River Waverly to Henderson Ford June 27 - by Sue Foxx

On Saturday, June 27, 9 paddlers from central Indiana met for the trip from Waverly to Henderson Ford on White River south of Indianapolis. It was a grey muggy day with the threat of showers. Undeterred, the group set off in kayaks and a canoe at 11:15 am with the river at 5.3 feet. The slightly higher level gave us a nice current with many rocks and logs underwater. Even at this level there were plenty of sandbars for a relaxing lunch. We finished at about 2:45 pm at Henderson Ford bridge without any rain. Sprinkles fell while we loaded up but all parted feeling lucky for a fun day on the river.
