Hello
All, Two weeks in Florida isn't enough. I came back to 28 degrees F in Indy. My Choctawhatchee trip was great. High water and cool temps only added to the excitement. I was "buzzed" by an Army helicopter and got a picture to prove it. Very exciting. A pair of osprey dive bombed my boat. I also saw an eagle. Paddled over 100 miles in 8 days. Some minor drama, I had been cutting the oxbows since the water was flowing across them thru the trees. It was fun manuvering thru the fast flowing water and popping out into the river on the other side. |

The
last
day
I
followed
a
quick
flowing
channel
off
RL.
It
flowed
into
a
wooded
area.
There
was
good
current
so
I
followed
what
looked
like
a
creek
channel.
After
1/2
hr
it
ended
in
a
swamp
with
slight
current.
I
reasoned
"follow
the
current"
and
it
would
take
me
back
to
the
river.
In
this
instance,
WRONG...it
only
took
me
deeper
into
the
swamp.
Heavy
growth
stopped
my
progress.
I
found
it
hard
to
backtrack
thru
the
trees. My GPS pointed the way to the river (about 1 mile to the NW) but it was impossible to get there directly. The water was often deeper than the paddleshaft, other times I would get out and drag the canoe. The swamp seemed to take me deeper instead of offering an escape. I would thread thru a tight section thinking I could see an opening up ahead only to get there and find more trees, vines, bushes...swamp. A moment of panic, everything looked the same. I couldn't hear the river running but knew it was up there somewhere. I kept probing, backtracking, probing. I considered having to sleep in the bottom of the canoe in the swamp. Not inviting. Finally after 45 minutes I clawed my way thru bushes to find a small open channel with slight current. Followed it to a larger bayou and eventually to the river. I stayed in the main channel the rest of the day. Here is a pic a Florida native took of me at Cypress Springs on HolmesCreek. Jose Joven |
